GREYHOUNDS Strong stayer’s run
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
Huatahi Prince has shown an inclination to run wide, but that tendency paid dividends in the Merv Gibson open feature race for greyhounds at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday afternoon- , . f Bv running in the middle of the' track. Huatahi Prince avoided the heavy going towards t.*e rail and had a little more in reserve than his opposition when it came to a hard slog down the home straight in the 840 m event. Huatahi Prince (Chief Zero— Taradale), a noted stayer, drifted in the early running, but he made a tvpical sweeping run along the back straight for the second time to be in the firing line as the leaders entered the home straight. A very weary field of eight plugged its wav down the home straight, but Huatahi Prince had easily the best finish and had a comfortable, three-length victory. Ann’s Retreat, which looked the likely winner on the home turn, battled courageously in the heavy going on the inside to hold second from Top Revs, another proven stayer, which was doing her best work at the finish. , The fastest heat qualifier, MysI tic Wave, found the ground ■ tough, and she and Thistledom, ‘ prominently placed over the last circuit, crossed the line almost ■ together, clear of Highsted Lass, I with a big break to the early I pacemaker. Saucy Dish, and Eilleen McManus, which never ' raised a gallop in the boggy ' ground. A . The winning sequence of Ariki Sue (counting heats) was extended to 10 when the little Karakara Kid fawn and white bitch grimly clung to a narrowadvantage clown the home i straight against Streaky Hobbs ] in the open sprint. ] Ariki Sue did not spurt away ! as usual and Streaky Hobbs was i alongside her for the first 100 m. But. assisted by the rails running. Ariki Sue gained a small break on the home turn. Streaky Hobbs challenged doggedly towards the finish and gave Ariki Sue one of her hardest races for some time, Torianna Charm, which jumped better, was a useful third, with Man-O-War a close and good fourth. Because of the atrocious ] weather and the small crowd, the equalisator was not run and
I the 10 races were run in quick] 2 succession. i| However, the rain did not; 3 t dampen the spirits of Helen and e George Little. They produced ] - el the winners in three races—Sar-ll i-1 khan Sal, which gained a de-IS •-I served success in the maiden I", I race; Ariki Sue; and Falcon], f Arrow, a little sister of Sakhanl e I Sue, a runaway winner in a s puppy 540 m, e' Master Brydie, Electric Fury, niNoble Surrender, Speedy Becky, gi Signor Caruso.
