Balmerino third

NZPA Ascot The champion New Zealand racehorse, Balmerino, was beaten into third place in the 2400 m Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday. Balmerino (9 to 4 favourite) failed to sustain a run from the back of the eighthorse field and trailed Montcontour (25 to 1) and the Queen’s filly, Dunfermline (5 to 1), by a length and a half and a head across the line. His jockey, Greville Starkey, settled Balmerino down behind the other seven over the first 600 m, and challenged for the lead two furlongs from home. But the champion French jockey, Yves St Martin, brought Montcontour from near last at the top of the straight through the centre of the field to burst to the front 200 m out. Balmerino, a five-year-old by Trictrac, was second to Alleged in last October's Arc de Triomphe at Longchamps. His four starts in tnis English flat season have resulted in a fourth, a first, a second and a third.
