NZPA-Reuter London Shangamuzo won the Ascot Gold Cup, Europe’s most-coveted prize for stayers, at Royal Ascot on Thursday to provide the jockey, Greville Starkey, with a remarkable treble. Shangamuzo. a 13-2 chance, took up the running three-quarters of a mile from home in the two and a half mile marathon and was never seriously challenged as he went on to beat Royal Hive (6-1) by two lengths. ’’arlier this month. Starkey won the Derby on Shirlev Heights and the Oaks on Fair Salima, which, like Shangamuzo is trained by Michael Stoute. The French-trained Hawk berry was a length and a half away third victory in the historic race. The Gold Cup. highlight of the third day of the meeting, was run in driving rain which upset the fashion conscious but was probably decisive for Shangamuzo. which performs better on soft ground.
