Chch tops total
PA Wellington Christchurch, out of all employment districts in New Zealand, has had the biggest rise in the number of jobless, according to the latest figures. Throughout New Zealand. the total registered as unemployed rose 684 to 23,619 in the two weeks to June 16. according to figures released yesterday by the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon). This is in addition to the 16.219 New Zealanders on special work on June 2. In the fortnight under
review, 13 employment districts had an increase in registered job seekers. The rise in Christchurch was 268, from 3716 to 3984. Tirnaru showed the third biggest rise in unemployed — from 225 to 338. Decreases were recorded in nine employment districts, the biggest in Auckland (113), and Rotorua (33). Include*! in the total of registered jobseekers were 2127 school-leavers. The number of notified vacancies which remained unfilled at June 16 was 1429.
Other totals, with June 2 figures in parenthesis, included: — Blenheim 313 (270), Nelson 387 (401), Greymouth 125 (112), D u n e d i n-Oamaru 546 (631). A total of 16,783 persons were being paid the unemployment benefit at June 16, said the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Walker) in a statement yesterday. The figure included 9998 males and 6785 females, about 6500 were under 20. The number of beneficiaries at June 2 was 16,666.
