Prevention of sports injuries ‘neglected’

PA Dunedin Professor J. Gwynne has criticised the Accident Compensation Commission for neglecting preventive and educational measures I in dealing with sports ini juries and for being too I concerned about econ- ! omics. If the commission changed its attitude and I spent more on prevention and education it would save more money, said Professor Gwynne, who is associate professor in the pathology department of the Otago Medical School. He was speaking at a ; sports medicine clinic held at Dunedin Teachers’ College. ! A representative of the commission, Mr G. Moller, i had said that his organisa- | tion would not pay for

free mouth-guards for rugby players even though it would save more money in the long run. “It would create a prec= edent that could become extremely expensive,” Mr Moller said. “The commission is beginning an educational campaign to make players aware of the need to wear mouthguards.” Professor Gwynne also attacked “thuggery” in rugby. “It is the duty of captains to report incidents of foul play,” he said. “Head and facial injuries are mainly caused by illegal actions.”

Professor Gwynne also told over-weight persons in their late 30s and early 40s to give up strenuous sport because of the danger of heart attacks.
