Unemployment figures

Sir, — Unemployment figures are obviously being repeatedly quoted by the news media as an election year gimmick, at the same time failing to state that unemployment is a permanent feature of the economy in all countries. In proportion to its population, New Zealand has a very small number of un-

employed. The European Common Market countries, for example, have been quoted as having more than six million unemployed, and the United Kingdom a figure approaching two million, with only 20 times the population of New Zealand. The news media here have been quoting a figure of 40,000 unemployed, and to enlarge this figure they include about 20,000 on special Government work. How can these people be really counted as unemployed? — only by those wishing to swell the figure. Of the 20,000 really unemployed, a large percentage are school-leavers, and others are unsuitable for employment as not possessing qualifications required by' employers. —- Yours, etc., R. V. SHAW.
