SHOWING THEM HOW

“Rugby” was the subject and’ the only subject at a two-day school in Nelson last week-end. In what was one of the first rugby schools of its kind, about 60 young players under 19 listened, watched. trained and played rugby. Nelson College was used as head-quarters for the school and visiting players were billeted. After playing matches on Saturday the rugby

scholars spent the evening in workshop groups and discussions and saw training films. From 9.15 a.m. on Sun=> day the players were put through basic skills unit and mini skills, and used various coaching aids. Weight training, team training, and a final discussion and evaluation on Sunday afternoon completed the week-end. Some of the country’s most experienced coaches gave up the week-end to

assist at the school. They included the well-known Canterbury and Linwood club coach, Ken Jarre, a former Marlborough captain and coach of the Marlborough side, Ray Sutherland, and Brian Cuff,, a former Manawatu half-back and present coach of the Wellington College Old Boys senior team. The school was run by Mr Brian Petterson, the Nelson Bays union coaching convener.

Some of the hardest work done during Sunday’s training was at the scrum machine where Mr Jane (shown above instructing . some enthusiasts), coaxed the best out of each pack of for; wards. The week-end was judged a big success and will undoubtedly be held next year. There is already talk of a week-long camp and the extension of the school in to other unions.
