Gorge toll rejected
Wellington reporter A plan by. the Methven .Jaycees to charge a small toll on’ the - Rakaia Gorge Bridge on Sunday, July 2, the proceeds to go. to the Telethon appeal,, has been rejected by the National Roads Board. The board considered that 'its first, job was to ensure the flow’ of traffic, not to hold it up. i However, the Mayor of [Port Chalmers (Mr J. F. Thom), thought it a pity a toll could not be made as a trial run for similar money-raising ventures elsewhere by the board itself.
