Magistrate's Court Alleged threat to shoot magistrate

An unemployed youth, aged 19. appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon after allegedlythreatening to shoot a Christchurch magistrate. He , was remanded in custody to lune 29 bv Mr J. S. Bisphan. S.M. The youth is Peter Walker Momo, who was charged with using threatening, words in the watch-house I reception fover of the Cen-: tral Police Station yesterday* morning. Sergeant B. N. Thompson' sought a remand in custody; to June 29, after saying thatj the charge involved a threat to shoot Mr K. W. Framp-1 ton. S.M. Police inquiries had shown that the defendant had

access to a w’eapon, he said. The Magistrate asked Momo if he wanted to be legally represented, and he replied that he did. As no duty solicitor was in the courtroom, the Magistrate said that in view of the defendant’s coming up for sentence on June 29 he would reman i Momo in custody to that date. Momo had been convicted by Mr Frampton, S.M., yesterday morning on an assault charge. At the morning hearing, Detective Sergeant J. J. Chadderton said that a boy of 15 who was talking with a friend after school at the corner of Tennyson and Colombo Streets had been punched in the face and kneed in the stomach by Momo for no apparent reason. Counsel (Mr D. .1. Taffs) said that Momo had hit the boy and told him to get off his bicycle because he (Momo) was upset about his girlfriend. Detective Sergeant Chadderton said that after hitting the boy, Momo had gone to a shopping centre where he had kicked over rubbish bins, kicked cars, and had shouted abuse at shoppers.

Memo was then remanded by Mr Frampton, S.M., to June 29 for a probation report and sentence. 78 CHARGES Jonathon William Tate, aged 18, unemployed, was sentenced to Borstal training when he appeared on 78 charges — mostly of false pretence — committed earlier this year. The defendant had pleaded guilty to 49 charges last week and to a further 29 yesterday. From these offences, he had obtained cash and goods worth about $2289. The Court heard last week that the defendant had obtained two stolen cheque books which had been used m committing the offences. He had also pleaded guilty to four charges of forgery’, one of theft, and one of a breach of periodic detention. Counsel (Mr C. D. Eason) said his client’s offending had been on a major scale and as such he had expected to be apprehended. He said ; t appeared that his client had become obsessed with "a sort of self-destructive idea.” Mr Eason said his client had also sought a prison sentence rather than Borstal training. The Magistrate said that, the defendant was in need of seme form Of training and' discipline, and that Borstal ■ training was the most appropriate sentence under the: circumstances. (Before Mr K. W.
