Factory plan deferred

About six acres of land near the old Waimakariri River bridge, near Kaiapoi, will be sold by a company which had plans to build a factory there which would have provided jobs for about 45 people. Alcan (N.Z.), Ltd, originally intended to build an aluminium extrusion plant on 13 acres just south of Kaiapoi but the No. 2 Town and Country Planning Appeal Board upheld objections to the project in July, 1974. The company was then thought to have been interested in building the factory on the site near the bridge, but will now sell the land.

The company’s managing director (Mr A. H. Swift) said yesterday that the project had been deferred because of the state of the economy, but that options were being kept open. The company still had equipment for such a factory in Christchurch, and had a site at Hornby.
