Abortion row flares again

NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States House of Representatives has renewed the controversy over use of Federal funds for abortions by voting to limit this money to cases where the life of the mother is in danger. The restriction was part of a bill providing SUSS7 billion for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and the Department of Labour in the new financial year. The H.E.W. funds include money for the Medicaid health-care programme for the poor, which paid for about 300,000 abortions in 1977.

Last year, the House and the Senate fought over the abortion issue for six months before agreeing on a compromise which would allow Medicaid payments for abortions when the life of the mother was in danger or when pregnancy was caused by rape or incest. But when the same wording was offered as an amendment to the latest bill it was defeated by 212 votes to 198. Supporters said that the bill discriminated against the poor. The Senate is expected to insist on the more moderate language when it takes up the bill, thus probably setting off another emotional dispute.
