The West Coast Regional Development Council had written to Mr Gair expressing concern about the
;ease with which preservation could take precedence over all other forms of (land use. : The council referred particularly to the Red Hills area and its possible inclusion in a national park. Mr Gair replied that he 'had discussed the matter with the Minister of Lands (Mr V. S. Young). Mr Gair said he was aware of the importance of "considered evaluation of
proposals al.ecting land use and development.” He had been watching closely the Little Red Hills mineral prospecting programme that had continued for eight or nine years. “There is a strong possibility of a large mineral deposit being present in this area . . . Before any final decision is made on the proposal to increase the area of the natioi -.1 park, we will discuss this aspect further.”
