Five-yearly driving tests

Sir,—Mr D. Keir, a former chairman of the Dunedin Driving Schools’ Association, recommends five-yearly driving tests (“The Press,” June 12). It is obvious that Mr Keir does not mentally arrange his statistics from the daily papers. From these he would realise that a large number of accidents are caused by drivers who have not held a licence for five years and a small percentage by those who have held a licence for 50 years or more. In all my ignorance of the traffic laws in over 40 years driving I find that commonsense is the best law to follow.—Yours, etc., J. CAVERHILL. June 12, 1978.
