Blasts wreck depot

NZPA Belfast Firemen were yesterday still at the scene of a huge blaze in Belfast’s central bus depot — started when 10 bombs went off in a series of carefully-timed explosions. Scores of firemen fought the blaze which badly damaged the buildings, offices, and canteen and destroyed at least 20 buses in the Smithfield depot in the city centre near the Army’s Grand Central Hotel base. Three raiders held up staff and planted the bombs in

strategic places throughout the depot. No-one was injured by the explosions, timed at fiveminute intervals, but damage was estimated to run to hundreds of thousands of pounds. The police started to evacuate th< area after a tipoff was phoned Co the Belfast Samaritans, but the bombs started to explode as people were still being taken from their homes nearby.

More than 20 families spent the night in temporary accommodation, although it was expected they would be allowed to return yesterday.
