Secondary teachers get pay settlement

PA Wellington The post-primary teachers salary dispute has been resolved. Details of the settlement were announced yesterday by the Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) after talks with representatives of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association at Parliament. The settlement, which will cost the government an extra SI.SM to S2M a year, is expected to affect

between 80 and 90 per cent of secondary teachers. The salary claim originally was lodged by the P.P.T.A. with the Education Services Committee in May, 1977. In protest against lack of progress in negotiations the association held a oneday national strike in February and stopwork meetings in school time last month. It had also banned administrative assistance in processing School Cer-

tificate and Sixth Form Certificate entries. Mr Gandar said yesterday that over the last three months he had become increasingly concerned about the effects the confrontation was having on the welfare of secondary school pupils and the morale of teachers, as well as teachers’ relations with their pupils, parents, and the community. A revised pay offer from the Government was accepted by the association yesterday.
