Rono to claim record
NZPA-Reuter Vienna Henry Rono, of Kenya, will claim a world record for the 10,000 metres after recording a time 8s faster than the previous mark in Vienna on Monday, organisers of the race said yesterday. A spokesman for the “Cricket Field" sports club said the club would formally apply to the International Amateur Athletics Federation for recognition of
Rono’s time of 27min 22.47 s as a world record. The world record which Rono beat was set at 27:30.5 in Helsinki last year by his compatriot, Samson Kirn o mb wa.
The spokesman said that three other runners who took part in Monday’s race had competed according to club rules and there was no question of their acting as “pace-makers" for Rono — which could have made the record subject to official challenge.
Kimombwa, in Budapest for an international meeting, said in an interview with a reporter of the Hungarian news agency MTI that he hoped to win back his 10,000 m record.
“Lam going to run in the 5000 and 10,000 metre races at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games,” he said. “Perhaps I will be able to win one of the events. As far as the 10,000 metres is concerned, I should like to clock at least 27min 155.”
