Burnside-West loses Blackman
Colin Blackman, who led Bumside-West University to victory in the senior cricket club championship last season. will be missing from the club’s top team next season.
The popular BurnsideWest captain has been transferred by his firm, Ballins Industries, to Wellington and he expects to take up his new position in October. Blackman, an Australian, learnt his cricket in Sydney and started playing senior cricket at 17. Ten of his 13 I senior seasons were with the iPetersham-Marrickville Club. His representative appearances were spread over three seasons. He played nine matches for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield competition and played international matches against New Zealand, India and the West Indies.
The 35-year-old Blackman came to Christchurch in 1975 and had played senior cricket for Burnside-West for the last four seasons. He accumulated 1337 runs at an average of 24.3, with a top score of 147 against Riccarton in his second season. Blackman feels that Burn-side-West has a strong basis and should feature prominently for many years. His promotion to Wellington has left him a little undecided about his cricket future. “I would like to keep playing, but I’ve had a good run for many years and my job and family have to be -considered first."
Often an unobtrusive player, Blackman was nevertheless a firm and sporting leader who will be missed by Burnside-West University.
