Southland girls win soccer
Southland won the Sutherland Shield, the symbol of South Island women’s soccer supremacy, at the annual South Island tournament, held in Blenheim. Teams from Nelson, Marlborough,' Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland took part and Southland’s win was its first in the competition. Canterbury, which won the tournament in the last two iseasons. finished second and 'Otago third. The competition required the teams to play five matches in two days. Canterbury’s team contained eight of last year’s winning combination and had it capitalised on the amount of possession it had it could .'have won the trophy for a 'third successive year. Canterbury’s top goal- ' scorer was Lesley Pollock (Rangers), whose tally ini eluded a hat-trick in an 8-0 j win over Marlborough. (Canterbury’s other players included in the South Island I squad ,of 21 picked at the I conclusion of the tournament I were the defenders, Cathy Harpur (Nomads) and Joanne Stevens (Halswell), two midfield players, Tina Margaritis and Ingrid de Meyer! (Rangers), Elaine Isaacs (Papanui) and Chris Clothier (Halswell).
The South Island team will (play the North Island after the national tournament later i in the year.
