Sir Hermes appeals in first leg today

Special correspondent Auckland If form at Ellerslie last; week counts for anything Sir Hermes, Pierree’s Order and Saltash must rate as excellent prospects for the I T.A.B. double at the Te 'Aroha Jockey Club’s meeting to be held at Avondale today. j The more moderate horses' (are being catered for by the Te Aroha Club’s programme so a win or placing there-; abouts during the Great' Northern meeting, just past, is a good recommendation The strong appeal which' j Sir Hermes and Pierree’s] Order make in the first leg, of the T.A.B. double, the ! Swney Memorial, derives from their winning and fin- [ ishing fifth at Ellerslie last Saturday. Sir Hermes, a rising five-1 year-old, did not win by! much last week-end but it I was a game performance! I that enabled him to edge out! Above the. Coulds, Duclie’s I Star and Lark in the Tecoma Handicap, a 2200 metres for! class three, four and five. ; Pierre’s Order came fifth! !in the Fitzroy Handicap, an intermediate 1600 m, looking] i as though she might bei ready for more distance. Her] maiden win, last spring, was] over 1900 metres and she! was successful as well during the first half of the season in a 2200 metres highweight at Te Aroha. Sir Hermes was another, which shaped up last spring as a promising middle-dis-1 tance runner. He has had! two wins from his last three! starts, the first of them a 2200 metres at Paeora on May 23. In between then and last Saturday he failed at Pukekohe but that was with the ground a bit too firm for his liking. Red Scabal, a three-year-old from Takanini, could be hard for Sir Hermes and Pierree’s Order to beat. After a couple of minor

iplacings he won well in a I maiden 2200 m at Pukekohe |on May 31. 11 Byrneside looks the best . of the others. His first win ll was a maiden 1900 m at Ro- . torua on May 27 and he . came fourth, meanwhile, in a class-four 2200 m at PukeJkohe, behind a very useful ’! three-year-old Chiefy. Saltash has become a prime prospect for the sec- > ond leg, the June Handicap. >. through his last-start third j placing on the first day of t !the Great Northern meeting behind Philanzak and Wave ’Again. J Saltash came home well in ; his one Ellerslie attempt and , his form was made to look . better when Philanzak won

j again last Saturday and . Wave Again finished third. The fact of his being ridden by D. A. Peake makes Innes Lad worth consideration and Triple Command I needs only to run as well as J he did last time, for an un- ; lucky second at Pukekohe on !;May 31, to be right in the |! finish. ■I Selections:— 11.5 a.m. — Graduation Steeplechase: Doublet, Reprint, Montedellah. 11.45 a.m.—Shute Maiden: Sibelius, Honolulu, Piston. 12.25 p.m. — Committee Hurdles: Ramon, Our Patron, Young Sid. 1.10 p.m.—Swney Memorial: , Pierree’s Order, Sir Hermes, Red Scandal. 1.50 p.m.—lmprovers' Maiden —First division: Safety Pin, Leinster.
