N.Z.er held in Iran
PA Wellington A young Wellington man in an Iranian jail faces a fine of about $40,000 for illegally selling a Mercedes Benz car. The New Zealand and British governments are trying through diplomatic channels in Teheran to get the fine either waived or substantially reduced. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would not reveal the
man’s identity or age yesterday. He is described as young. Informed sources said he was nearing the end of a six-month prison sentence in a northern province of Iran. It is believed the charges involved falsifying documents related to the car both on entering and within Iran. The involvement of the British Government occurred because the man was travelling on a British passport.
