Insulation for older houses ?
The Waimairi County Council wants to make mandatory the insulation of ceilings in older houses that are having additions built on to them. At a town-planning committee meeting councillors agreed that this should be come council policy provided it was parcticable and rea sonable. Council staff will be asked) to draft a by-law for study) by the committee. The committee’s chairman! (Cr I. Calvert) said that al-: though some home-owners might object to the cost of insulating their whole ceiling area when they wanted to build extensions, the cost!
would be recovered in power! bill savings well before the! interest-free loan for the in-j sulation was paid off. Cr F. Chisholm, who had: asked the council to consid-! er the idea, said that ths energy lost through older: houses without insulation! amounted to millions of dol-1 lars. One committee member) i suggested there might be ill! j feeling from ratepayers I forced to pay for insulation lof their whole roof area jwhen they wanted to add ) rooms to their houses, espe-) | dally if they intended to) [build the extensions them- . i selves to save money.
