Treasure-hunters race for Titanic
NZPA West Berlin Three West Berlin trea-sure-hunters are racing against time to finance a long-planned arempt to reach the British liner Titanc (sunk 66 years ago with 1517 people aboard) before a British salvage company gets there first. The West Berliners, 1 nomas Gfoerer. Joerg Somterfeld, and Joerg Woltmann. have for more than a year been trying to raise an estimated 50 million Deutschmarks (about 523 million! thev need for the expedition. valuables, especially diamonds. the three formed a financing company for their venture. So far they have been, promised only 2.5 million, marks ($1.2 million) and of that amount only about 10 per cent has actually been paid over. Now a British firm has announced pians to reach the wreck the West Berliners have launched a new appeal for funds, cutting back the proposed cost of ’heir operation to five million marks ($2.3 million). Their new quest may he launched this autumn or next spring. The Titanic sank in April. 1912. in the Atlantic after it I struck an iceberg. |
