‘Chileans killed former Minister’
NZPA Santiago A Chilean writer. Mariana Callejas, has said that three! Chilean officers were in-j solved in a 1976 murder plot in Washington and that; her husband had planted the; bomb that killed the former Chilean Foreign Minister, Orlando Letellier. She said that American legal officials would soon, request extradition of the; three officers, whom she named as General Manuel; Contreras, former head of j the Chilean political police.; D.1.N.A., at the time of the; murder, and two other for-: mer D.1..N.A. members. Cap-; tain Fernandez Larios and ?.lajor Pedro Luis Espinoza. Mrs Callejas said that she' and her husband, an Ameri-; can. Michael Towley, worked for the D.I.N.A. at the time Mr Letellier was killed in September. 1976. The organisation was disbanded last year. Mr Towley personally planted the bomb that killed Mr Letellier and one of his
colleagues in his car in | Washington, she said. Mr Towley was expelled' Ifrom Chile last April and is I now being tried in the United States. An American investigation ! showed that Mr Towley and! Captain Fernandez Larios both entered the United! States in August 1976, with ! Chilean passports issued ■ under false names. . On Friday, Mrs Callejas' returned from Washington.! where she was questioned! (by a Federal prosecutor. , ; Mr Letellier was Foreign; Minister under the Chilean Popular Unity Government of Salvador Allende that was overthrown in September, 1973. The Chilean military Gov-j (eminent has agreed to al visit by a United Nations! team to investigate alleged! violations of human rights.! The announcement follows! the suspension of an 18-dayj hunger strike by about 200 Chileans protesting against, t h e unexplained dis-1 appearance of relatives.
