Timeball Station
fdfd
The Timeball Station at Lyttelton will be opened to the public as soon as adequate off-street parking for cars and buses can be provided. according to Mr John Daniels, director of the Historic Places Trust. There have been difficulties in getting this parking space, however. The area first planned for the park I proved too unstable to con-' solidate and develop, although this was not dis-; covered until some time after initial investigations; were made. An alternative site at the; bottom of the station land was now being investigated,; and its cost of development; estimated, said Mr Daniels. \ Most of the interior decor-* ation had been completed., and the big photographic dis-* plays being prepared would* be ’ installed soon. The, grounds were still to bei landscaped, but this would, also start soon. In any case, he said, it was likely ’that the building would be opened some time 'before the official ceremony, | which would be delayed until ! better weather. The trust is also planning ■to publish a book about the history of the station, based ion research by Mr D. H. iClibbom, secretary' of the : Lyttelton Maritime Associajtion. and edited by Mrs Julie ißremner. of Wellington. I “Mr Clibborn has already
' thoroughly researched the history of the station and has given' the trust a most fascinating draft of it with a large collection of photographs for use in the book,” said Mr Daniels. “The trust is looking into ways of publishing the book.” DEPARTURES Coastal Trader (7.50 p.m.), Dun-: edin.
