Lister fourth in golf
NZPA Memphis John Lister, of New Zealand, fired a final-round 69 vesterday to finish fourth in the 5U5250.000 Danny Thomas golf classic. Lister finished on 279, only two strokes behind Andy Bean and Lee Trevino, both Americans. Bean holed a 12m birdie putt on the first extra hole to beat Trevino in a sudden death play-off to claim his second consecutive title. Trevino started the last round in a tie for nineteenth place, but shot the best round of the tournament, 65, yesterday. Tom kite was third, on 278.
And at Tervuren, Belgium, the New Zealand veteran Bob Charles finished seven strokes behind the leader, Noel Ratcliffe, (Australia) in the Belgian open. The only other New Zealand entrant, Simon Owen, finished one behind Charles. Charles turned in a total of 287 and Owen 288 compared to Ratcliffe’s 280. Ratcliffe came from six strokes behind with a shattering final round of 66 to win the championship and the $lO,OOO purse by a single stroke. Fellow-Australian Chris Tickner, a joint third-round leader, hung on to second place with a final round of 73, but the main casualties of the day were the Britons Ken Brown and Tony Jacklin.
Jacklin, one stroke away from the lead overnight, slinped to a 75 yesterday, still good enough for a share lof third spot with two comI patriots, Malcolm Gregson land Bill Longmuir.
