Shantytown restaurant gets liquor licence

Greymouth reporter A liquor licence has been granted to Every* body’s Restaurant, at Shantytown, by the Licensing Control Commission. In a reserved decision announced after a hearing in Christchurch on April 18, the commission said that a restaurant licence would be granted provided that the restaurant’s toilet facilities were extended, storage and display facilities acceptable to the police were provided, that a clearance from the health and fire authorities was obtained, and that advice that Shantytown had no objection to the licence was received.

Liquor cannot be served with morning and afternoon teas.

The application was opposed on behalf of the Windmill Restaurant, at Kumara, some 10 kilometres distant, this restaurant being on a main highway, whereas Everybody’s Restaurant is situated on a side road some distance from a highway. The objector asserted that the service provided by the Windmill Restaurant was adequate to the area and the travelling public, and that the grant of a licence would enable the applicants to open earlier.

The commission pointed, however, to the support the applicant was already receiving and to the provisions of the Sale of Liquor Act, insofar as hours of operation are concerned. “On the evidence before us, and from our own knowledge of the complex, we are satisfied that the application should be granted, particularly in view of the whole purpose of the Shantytown complex,” the commission said.
