Twelve wins for de Filippis at Nelson meeting
From G. K. YULE Nelson
The de Filippi brothers, Michael and Colin, yesterday advanced their number of wins to 12 for the two days of the Nelson Trotting Club's Winter meeting. Yesterday Michael had four wins, while Colin had but one. Micha -1 finished with seven wins for the two days, while Colin had five. Michael gained his fourth success for the day when Aldomet beat Captain Forever and Don Cortez, which dead-heated, by a length in the Kirbys Handicap. Aldomet. which changed hands earlier in the day and will finally join Kevin Holmes's team in North America, led briefly near the 1400 m and trailed later. He was pulled out early in the run home and fought on well to gain his win. Both < aptain Forever and Don Cortez were slow away and they did well to return a dividend. Ungava. after leading early, lost her position and finished fourth, ahead of Tennessee. Followers of the brothers in the divisions of the Peter Chisholm Handicap received a double dividend of $116.30. Michael won th» first division with the 19/20 favourite. Regal Fare, trained at Yaldhurst by her part-owner. Bob McMillan. The daughter of Regal Yankee and Sanfarer was having only her second race start and was neglected in the betting after a poor
! showing on Saturday.: Yesterday she won handily from the pacemaker, Lord Apollo, and Holy Dan. Colin’s drive in the second: division was Rimuaser Boy, I a stablemate of Katea Lad,! with which he was success-| ful on Saturday. He tracked the pacemaker, Lucky Armbro, until the last 200 m and came on to win' more easily than the official margin of neck would sug-[ gest. The others, headed by Oversight, were beaten off. Flaxton, an easy winner on Saturday, had little difficulty justifying favouritism in the Turf Hotel Handicap. This time Michael de Filippi; was his driver as Colin had Zarzuella in the field. Flaxton was a shade slow, but received a splendid run"
. afterwards. He came on I boldly in the straight to beat; I Highland Lad, in the open [ for much of the last 1200 m, | I by half a length. i Zarzuella did well for an J inexperienced horse to finish [ third, just ahead of the un-| lucky Ganelon, which lost . his position on the home : turn and did well to finish i so close. Michael de Filippi gained his third success for the day ' when the first-day winner, Jerry’s Best, had little diffi-ll culty overcoming his handicap of 40m in the Baaz' Watch Handicap. He pulled!; his way up to the leaders j I and passed Lady Estes with: 800 m to run. From then on he was ' trotting comfortably and he[i i‘won with ease by eighth
[lengths from Port Ligar, i which shaded Lucky Dud. Regal Cord made ground for [fourth, ahead of Hambidark [and Sorraia, which drifted [badly at the start. [ Jerry’s Best has now won [four races, all of them on the Richmond Park track. Peter Jones had a first ex-i perience as a winning owner when Protea, which he races in partnership with his mother and father, was successful in the Max Husband [Handicap. The half-sister, by Gar[rison Hanover, to Dupreeze) iand other winners, got up! [by a bare margin over the rather unlucky favourite, [ [Paul’s Express, with Georgiei Girl and Hullabaloo close by) )in what was the keenest fin- [ iish at the meeting.
