Narita closed briefly

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo About 3000 riot police are braced for harassment by opponents of Tokyo’s newly-opened international airport at Narita. The number of radicals around the airport, 50 kms east of Tokyo, increased at the week-end to 600 from 360 earlier. On Saturday night the airport was temporarily closed for nearly 20 minutes as a precautionary step when three tethered balloons were sent up both ends of the only runway of the airport, forcing the postponement of tnree outward cargo flights. It was the first obstruction by opponents, affecting landings and take-offs, since the airport formally opened on May 20. Police wireless communications in Narita were also jammed by signals believed to have been emitted by radicals. But there was no trouble as police immediately switched to different frequencies, the police said. Car tyres and pieces of wood were also burned on farm land and on roads south of the runway, but firemen extinguished them quickly. The police said that they believed that these harassment activities were part of a 100-day anti-airport struggle beginning on June 5 bv an anti-airport league. The league comprises 130 farm householwho refused to sell their land for airport extension projects backed by Left-wing radicals.
