Later water-ski-ing ?
City Council Reporter | Recreational rivalry between sports interests and nearby residents, especially' around the Estuary, is getting more intense. Competition for use of the beach is also increasing. ’"ater-ski ing, power boating, and land yachting have been discussed by Christchurch city councillors again. Some Southshore and South New Brighton residents are tired of noise from V. ' Estuary ..nd al.-o want fo ward off possible problems »n the oeach side of their homes. A petition against land; yachting was presented to; the parks and recreation tomtnittee. However, the tommittee subsequently said that the sport's original ihree-month trial should be
(extended through the winter' to give it a fair chance. Other residents want Estuary power boat and, (water ski lanes shifted further south. However one; ’councillor said it would only .’serve to bring the noise nearer to homes in Redcliffs, and Mt Pleasant. The parks committee re-1 commended that water ski-i ing be permitted one hour’ either side of high tide, starting at 9 a.m. and ending an hour before sunset, instead of the present rule that ski-ing must end by 6 p.m. That would give more; summer daylight hours for ;the sport. Trail bike riding, another) sport that need:, open country, is also becoming more; popular, and need- desig-) nated sites. The problem has I had the least study, even I
though Waimairi County provides an area in Sawyers Arms Road.
