No radiation rise
Detailed tests made.during, the visit of the American nuclear submarine Pintado to Auckland in January showed no increase in radioactivity. The National Radiation Laboratory of the Depart-
ment of Health carried out routine monitoring of water samples, bottom sediment, filter-feeding molluscs, and air, as required by the New Zealand Code for NuclearPowered Shipping. “Results of measurements on all samples collected during and after the nuclear ship’s visit showed only
those traces of natural radioactivity, and at the same levels as were measured in the pre-visit samples,” said the report. “The monitoring instruments on tfie patrolling launch, the wharf, and those; caried by the mobile land teams at no time indicated] radiation exposure levels -in! excess of the normal back-, ground levels.” The triggering of the gamma alarm while the launch was on patrol had been caused by an electrical leak due to sea spray.
