Manawatu held to draw
PA Palmerston North The paucity of talent in Manawatu’s inside back positions was shown up on Saturday, when Manawatu was held to a 17-17 draw by Taranaki in a division one championship rugby match at Palmerston North.
An injury to the top first five-eighths, Jim Carroll, resulted in the Manawatu selector playing the usual fullback, Alan Innes, in the five-eighths — a move that failed badly. Innes was flatfooted when he received Mark Donaldson’s passes, and his lack of punting power was shown up time and again when pressured by Taranaki’s marauding loose forwards. For Manawatu, Ken Granger and Hugh Blair scored tries and Hobbs kicked three conversions. Tony Brown iscored both of Taranaki’s tries, and Stephen Davidson kicked three penalties.
