Senior netball lead unchanged

St Nicholas and Technical continued to share the lead with good wins over Burnside A and Riccarton respectively in the senior netball competition at Hagley Park on Saturday.

Only two points behind, Sacred Heart B still has a chance to upset the competition. It will play Its critical game against ! Technical next Saturday. Sacred Heart B 43, Cashmere 17. sacred Heart got away to a quick stall, netting five goals before Cashmere could get the ball to its goal circle. Sacred Heart’s moves flowed smoothly, with the forwards, Mary-Ann Kibblewhite, Daphne White, and Gabrielle Martin, bringing the ball with speed to the circle, and allow’ing Penny Berry scoring opportunities.

Cashmere’s centre throw-off was continually broken by the strong defence of Philippa Karetai but Cashmere continued to pass to Sally Marshall Instead of using other players.

Karetai, new to the team after a move from Dunedin, has settled well and is now playing a strongly positional game, complementing the other defences. At half-time the score was 22-6 in favour of Sacred Heart.

Cashmere lifted its plav at the start of the second half and a downturn in Sacred Heart's plav meant, that goals came one fn r O rin Two po n nt’ I

Berry should have made it difficult for her but unobstructed views for White and Kibblewhite allowed for a well directed feed.

Cashmere was forced into extra passes round the circle before it could penetrate the tight Sacred Heart defence. Overheads to Linda Shepherd were a’ joy to Brenda Rowberry’, who Is playing at the same standard as in her representative years. Glen vs Warnes worked hard in goal defence for Cashmere and gave good back-up on the centre pass. But the team had no answer for the three swiff nasses from centre to circle and Sacred Heart finished 25 goals ahead. Technical 45, Riccarton 20. A similar pattern was repeated in the second game of the day, with Technical scoring five quick goals before Riccarton recorded one. The goal attack, Frances Granger. was in good shooting form: it made no difference whether ! she was under the post or shooting from the perimeter. l With unerring accuracy all shots' found the ring. defence. Technical looked as teihal as ever. Riccarton s forwards were forced into careless errors such as stepping and held ball and Technical was ahead. 24-8. at half-time. Riccarton opened strongly in the second half and plaved with more confidence. Quick passes from Karen Ericson and Sarah Fitzgerald gave Bridget Hishop scoring opportunities. However, this was short lived, with Riccarton feeders failing to make use of Hishon’s height advantage. Too many flat nasses were intercepted bv Sue Morion when, with a little more lift, thov would have been Fishon’s. A tiring F’ccarton teem left Technical nlaying an open aerial game to score another big win. ■ Haqley 23, Burnside B 13.
