Ashburton wins testing relay
The Ashburton A team won the big annual Anglican block relay event over a testing crosscountry course of 6.4 km at Spencer Park on Saturday. New Brighton B was second, and Presbyterian A was third. The course offered water hazards. sandhills, and plenty of obstacles, including big tree trunks. The Christchurch Harrier Club won the women’s event over skm University A was second, and Ashburton third. Gavin Donaldson (Christchurch i took fastest men's lap time, and Mary O’Connor (University; took fastest women’s, lap time. The meeting attracted a record total entry of 725 runners from 20 clubs in the Canterbury area. The growing popularity of running among women was reflected in the record entry of 108 women in the relay event. Their ages ranged from 16 to 48. There was a record of 13 veteran (over 401 men’s teams, including a Toe H Club team comprising men over 50. The Olympic veterans combination took fastest time. The former New Brighton 50 mile winner. Don Greig, of New Brighton, recorded good times after running two laps for his team as well as a lap warmup.
