North Beach edges ahead in badminton
The defending champion. North Beach 1, edged to a onepoint lead over its onlj serious rival. Railway, when the second round of the A grade badminton competition began on Saturday. It took North Beach hardly any time at all to beat Canterbury 11. 8-0. The only point of interest was that Canterbury’s Colin Goh and Don le Page surprised b\ taking a game ofi Peter Whiting and David Ross in the doubles. Railway was without its top woman, Glenys Waller, who was resting with a back injury. Pat Marshall, an A reserve, took her place and her singles was Railwav’s only loss to Hagley I. Later Mrs Marshall and Pat Duckmanton were in dangei of dropping another match when their doubles against Karen Burn and Jennie Hood went to three games. But helped by their opponents’ errors, the Railwav pair won the third game decisively. In one of the other two ties of the round. Paul Boatwood gave I laglev II a good start against Knox when he scored an
upset win over Warren Edge-; cumbe in the top men’s singles. The singles were shared, two each, and it was only two threegame doubles wins that carried Knox to a 5-3 win. In both the top men’s and the second mixed. Hagley II seemed to have battled its way to a winning position before falling behind. Although' a member of the beaten team. Ross Campbell played impres- : sively. Knox could possibly attribute its success to its calmness under pressure. Hagley had the added pressure of knowing that if it could win just one of the two closely fought doubles it would probably have won the tie on a count-back. University, which did not register its first win until its last tie of the first round showed that it had a taste for success by having an unexpectedly easy 6-2 win over North Beach 11. The die was cast when Chon Chong and Grant Girdler won the first two singles for University Taking heart from this the students attacked forcefully and to good effect in the doubles.
