Special correspondent Auckland
Wata Devil’s failure to do better than third behind Otara Jack and Chessington in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday made no difference to the plans for his campaign in Melbourne.
The trainer, G. A. Roger s son, said that all things considered he was quite satisfied with Wata Devil’s latest showing. The horse, he said, would have performed better if there had been a stronger pace. In any case he needed much softer ground. Wata Devil was booked to be taken to Melbourne by air today by K. Rogerson, a brother of the trainer and the stable foreman. G. A. Rogerson flew to Sydney last night to complete arrangements for licensing, registrations and the like.
The first event set Wata Devil in Australia will be the Moonee Valley Hurdles on June 24 with the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles to follow then a steeplechase or two before he is taken to Europe for further racing.
The horse will be ridden in Melbourne by P. W. Membery who will make the trip just a day or two before Wata Devil’s first start.
