Very good at peak and has looked lately as though he is nearing his best again. Battled home well last Saturday at Ellerslie. Change to softer ground would help. 5 6121 BETTER BE GOOD (20) 54.5. Very good up to 1600 m. Game winner last Saturday at Ellerslie under 53kg. This will be first try at a longer distance. Usually runs on generously. Likes soft ground. 6 0027 DANDALEITH (W) *54.5. Fair second two starts back over 2200 m at Trentham but well beaten meanwhile at Foxton. 7 5431 ROSS RULA form has been up to 1600 m but promising enough when third two starts back over 2200 m at Rotorua. Ran on gamely to win 1600 m at Ellerslie last Saturday. Not the least chance. , 8 7022 APOSTLE (1) 53.5. Due to win again after solid efforts for second over 1600 m at Ellerslife last Saturday and Monday. Has also shown sound middle-distance form. L. Douglas 9 1645 LAVARO (11) 53. Fourth and fifth at last two starts were over middle-distances at Wanganui on June 3 and 5. Won over 2000 m at Gisborne four starts back but this is tougher. 10 9503 MORVEN CHIEF (16) S 3. Good free-runner at best and ; good third after leading at last start over 2200 m at Ruakaka on May 26. R. Taylor II 5000 OUR WARD (2) S 3. Capable on winter tracks and should soon improve once the ground softens. Not dan gerous so far in four starts

since back from a summer spell. A. Tweedie 12 0441 STAR ECHO (4) 52.5. Continued steady improvement when successful over 2200 m at Ruakaka on May 26. Won on heavy ground at Avondale last spring. D. Southworth 13 000 REKLAW (6) 52. Has failed to show up since back from a summer spell but reached good form on soft tracks last spring and won 2400 m Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie on a heavy track. Might need softer going before getting to his best again. 14 2030 SHURADE (8) 52. Came back from a spell to finish third over 1600 m at Te Rapa on May 13 but well beaten meanwhile at Rotorua. Stays well at best. 15 3211 COMMUNIQUE Runaway winner at last two starts in intermediate middledistances at Te Rapa and Paeroa. Down 7kg in weight for this tougher one. Seems certain to again run very prominently. 16 1649 QUESTION Won over 1400 m at Gisborne four starts back and fair fourth over 1600 m at Ellerslie last Saturday. Form overall, however, somewhat disappointing. 18 1113 RUA MANA (14) 51.

Came through Intermediate grades looking good and managed class-one Impressively when close tMrd over 1600 m at Ellerslie last Monday. Likely light-weight. Balloted out in order of reentry:— 17 7200 KORBEL (19) 51. Has shown high promise but on softer ground than is likely for this one. Chance could come later in the winter. N. Tiley 19 0031 COPING (3) 50.5. Back to good form at last. Showed much promise early last year and won well, class two, 2200 m at Ellerslie last Saturday. Down 4.5 kg for this tougher company. S. Autridge 20 1124 GAY MONARCH (9) 50.5. Very useful intermediate and high-weight middle-distance runner but would probably find this too tough. Scratched: Tumbler (18). 3.25 p.m.— VISITORS' HANDICAP $6000; 1400 m. 1 9908 SHIFNAL CHIEF (8) 63. Fine galloper when in peak form and winner of five races on this track. Well beaten when resuming racing after a layoff at 1200 m at Rotorua on May 27 but should have improved with the run. Worth attention. 2 0000 INKY'S GOLD (15) 57. One of the best winter sprinters last year which has had firm tracks right against him in his attempt at a comeback. Unlikely to show much improvement unless the ground softens considerably. S. Autridge 3 60 PREFER (12) 56. Good middle-distance runner which made a fresh start against the sprinters at Rotorua on May 27. Outpaced then and could be expected to need another race or two. J. Grylls 4 0490 GUEST STAR (18) 55. Excellent stayer but hardly likely to rinse the speed for this distance in first start for six months. R. Tucket 5 1080 PURA SETA (14) 55. Had first start after a long spell against the sprinters at Rotorua on May 27. This will be first race meanwhile. Hardly likely at this stage. 6 000 LORD NOVELLO (5) 54.5. Has failed to show up in his few starts since back from a let-up. Well back over 1200 m at Ellerslie last Saturday. Probably needs softer ground.

Stayed on gamely behind Redan in sprint at Ellerslie • last Monday and also third to Better Be Good over 1606 m at Ellerslie on June 3. 9 3224 LUCK ROONA (16) 54. Consistent and due to win at any time. Good fourth over 1600 m at Ellerslie on Monday behind Ross Rula after pacemaking. On a softer track would be one to beat. T. Williams 10 78 BRUREE (22) 53. Has run fairly in two starts since back from spell. Improver but likely to need more distance. D. Peake 11 0 KAUERE LAD (9) 53. Capable in winter ground but will very likely need this one, his second race after a fair spell. Finished near rear at Ellerslie on May 6. T. Autridge 12 6607 DUMAR (13) 52.5. Good performer in winter ground but resuming here after spell of 12 months. One of the more interesting candidates. A. Campbell

13 3917 MEED (7) 52. Won a class-one sprint two starts back at Paeroa on May 23 when favoured by softer track. Moderate seventh at Ellerslie last Saturday. Could improve again on easier ground. 14 2626 MISTY BRAE (19) 52. Handy sixth behind Better - Be Good over 1600 m at Ellerslie on June 3. Previously second over 1400 m at Ruakaka on May 26. Always a prospect. R. Vane* 15 0006 CHEEKY COUNTESS (17) 51.5. Very capable on Soft tracks and could be expected to improve quickly. Made some ground for sixth in sprint at Ellerslie last Saturday, B. Compton 16 1140 CLOUSTON (11) 513. Looked good coming through intermediate grades but well back at last start over 1600 m at Te Rapa on May 20. Better placed under handicap conditions. G. Simonsen 17 1110 MANADO (1) 51.5. Impressive through intermediate grades but well beaten last Saturday in Carbine Club Stakes after going wide on home turn. Could be worth another chance. B. Doyle

Not prominent in two starts so far since back from a spell. Finished eighth of 13. In sprint at Ellerslie lust Saturday. Hardly likely from this wide draw. 21 0000 KERRIBEE (3) 51. Too long out of form to be allowed much chance. Beaten off sixteenth last time over 1400 m at Ruakaka on May 26 in first start zifter a lay-off. 22 1800 MATE LETTS (4) 51. Won intermediate 1400 m at Avondale in December but form otherwise not impressive. K. Reggett Balloted out in order of reentry:— 18 3700 APRIL WINE (21) 51. Finished third four starts back at Gisborne. Not prominent meanwhile at Te Rapa and Ellerslie. Sure to be at long odds. 24 0 TALLFIRE (23) 51. Baek always and fifteenth at finish of sprint at Paeroa on May 23. Vast improvement needed. 23 0600 OAKVALE (10) 51. Out of form too long. Scratched: Ben Braggie (20).
