Electricity cost $12M too much

PA Wellington The Government spent about Sl2-3M more than it had estimated on electricity supply last year. The over-expenditure, revealed in the annual report of the Controller and Auditor-General (Mr A. C. Schailes) was mainly due to an extra 510.4 M on fuel for thermal stations resulting from low water levels at hydro-generation lakes. Another over-ex-penditure was in the labour vote, where employment promotion cost 54.6. M more than estimated. Among the larger cash write-offs made during the

financial year ended March 31 was $624,154 for the Inland Revenue Department, which included $619,812 for land and income tax not collected. An amount of $80,206 was written off in the Housing Corporation’s housing account for uncollected rents and unrecovered costs of repairing damage to rental accommodation. Thefts of cash totalling $33,673 and stores totalling $28,797 were reported in the Railways Department during the financial year, compared with $4020 and $10,050 respectively the previous financial year.
