PA Wellington Government spending of more than SIOOM on unemployment and job creation is budgeted for in the Government’s estimates for 1978-79. This includes a doubling of the amount scheduled to be paid for unemployment benefits by the Social WelI a r e Department, to 145.733 M. The Labour Department, estimates it will spend SS7M on creating public and pri-. lute-sector jobs, and provid-' Ing help through training in- 1
ijcentives and an accelerated ,- maintenance programme. The Department of Social Welfare last year spent ; .$19.865M on unemployment .'benefits, which was SSM more than it budgeted for. , This year it has based its ’ ■ budget on an average rate of ' unemployment that is about : I double last year's. The Labour Department i ' estimates it will spend I $40.5M creating jobs in the' : public sector. It expects the; biggest increase in these will; come from local authorities; which take advantage of al *lOO per cent subsidy.
