Water polo improves

The New Zealand water polo team acquitted itself respectably in a short test series in Australia this week. After losing the first test, 3-11, having travelled that day, New Zealand steadily improved to 1-8 and 3-8 results in the succeeding matches, with Russell McConnochie the outstanding player. He scored three of the goals, John Davie another three, and the captain, Dennis Reid, the other. The trip would have provided vital experience for the younger players, Svein Sandoy and Graham Duffy. As in the world championship elimination matches in Christchurch last March, New Zealand still had trouble with its man-up attack but the gap had closed a little, with Australia not as proficient as then.
