Jack Carter was great ploughman

Match ploughing has lost more than its share of notable personalities in recent months. The death occurred recently of Mr J. G. (Jack) Carter, who was widely acknowledged as one of the most able exponents of

the art of ploughing in the country. His long record of successes was testimony to his skill and had he been younger when the New Zealand championships began in 1956 he might well have represented New Zealand with distinction overseas.

He first began match ploughing with a threehorse team in 1924 and in 1939 he graduated to tractors. By 1964 he had clocked up close to 100 first placings and championship plot awards. Mr Carter was runner-

up in the first New Zealand ploughing championships ever held at Papakaio in North Otago in 1956. And in the following year at Prebbleton he was third. He was an acknowledged master of ploughing. He held that the key to his success had been his equipment, and with a twofurrow plough that he built himself and used for many years he was rarely beaten. Once having the right equipment it is of course necessary to know it well and be able to use it and Mr Carter made a close study of ploughing. In more recent years he judged regularly and more than once officiated in judging panels for the national championships. He was a man who held strong views and behind the scenes preparing for ploughing and other events there were few people who worked as conscientiously.
