Logging policies

Sir,—Mr Prebble’s promise that a Labour Government would phase out the logging of virgin indigenous State forest in the central North Island, was welcomed by the 900 conservationists at Taupo. However, he did not say when the phasing out of the logging would be completed. As there are so few of these unique mixed podocarp forests left, it is imperative that logging cease immediately, and legal protection be given to the remnants remaining. Many Wildlife Service and D.S.I.R. scientists are extremely worried that already too little forest may be left to form viable reserves. This is especially so in Pureora where logging is still proceeding despite the treesitting protest in January. If it continues, the Waipapa reserve recommended by the Wildlife Service will be cut in half, thus jeopardising the long-term survival of the endangered North Island kokako.—Yours, etc., . D. M. SHAW, June 7, 1978.
