Well earned wheelchairs

The executive of the R.S.A tjtold Mr Hawkey while he 'was in Blenheim that if he i i completed the run they •Iwould add $l5O to the $450 ■ ; for the purchase of a wheel- j ‘ chair. He will travel to Bien-’ -;heim at the week-end for the; i presentation.

Mr Hawkey said the run I would not have been possible had it not been for his [assistant, Miss Glenda KempI ton, who drove a car behind I him throughout the journey, arranged sponsorship and aci commodation, and provided I refreshment and changes of gear for him while on the road.

Recovering from the run yesterday, Mr Hawkey said that he was a little “tender”

and was having a little trouble with his left hip. : “It will be about two weeks[ I before I run again,” said Mr [Hawkey, who has clocked] !9000 miles since he began] running four years ago. [ His first run for the! Crippled Children Society, of; which he is a life member,; was in 1975, from Timaru to 1 Ashburton. These were followed by runs from Timaru to Christchurch, and last year from Greymouth to Christchurch.
