Effort to boost hockey funds

The New Zealand Hockey Association will hold a national ’*goal-a-thon” on June 10 to raise funds to promote hockey and to allay some of the criticism against it in the last year. Players throughout New Zealand, about 15,000 of them, are being asked to participate in he venture. As an incentive clubs will receive a third of any money they raise. The other two thirds will be split equally between local associations and the N.Z.H.A. The chairman of the N.Z.H.A. (Mr D. L. Coulter) said that raffles and other fund-raising schemes in the last few years had not been supported by some of the main associations.

This time he hoped that each player would average a minimum of $1 in sponsorship, giving the N.Z.H.A. about $5OOO. Players would be sponsored for the number of goals their teams scored on the day and each team would start with one goal. “We have had plenty of criticism over the last year or so for supposedly not doing anything for hockey: here is a chance for players and administrators to show their support,” said Mr Coulter. If any association had to postpone matches on June 10 the venture would beheld the following Saturday.
