Four-day week wanted
The Canterbury Union of the Unemployed has called on the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) to make special provision in the Budget for more employment opportunities. In submissions to Mr Muldoon, the union urges an extension to the time limit of three months under the temporary employment programme, the creation of more imaginative work under the
job-creation scheme, the restructuring of the working week so that all workers work a four-day week for five days pay, and that the Government extend its educational schemes for the unemployed. All married people should be eligible for the unemployment benefit, and benefits should be made easier to obtain, the union says.
