Although the Woodward Cup premier inter-club golf championship has not yet reached halfway,, none of the eight top seeds has managed to record the perfect score of three wins.

Leading the way is the aggressive Avondale youngster, Ricky Vincent with two wins and one half. Another junior, Mark Street (Harewood) is also unbeaten with one win and two halves.

Vincent, a powerful and sometimes under-estimated player, has accounted for two members of the 1977 Canterbury Freyberg Rose Bowl team, Stephen Street (Coringa) and Bruce Taylor (Russley). Taylor, the provincial match-play champion, is

always difficult to topple, but Vincent has managed it in their last two Woodward Cup encounters. His half was against Mark Street in an even struggle on Street’s home course. Competition is fierce and cut-throat among the eight top club players and Geoff Saunders (Christchurch) is the only other No. 1 to have scored two wins apart from Vincent, His loss was to Bob Farrant (Waitikiri). Farrant, Taylor, Stephen Street and John Prebble (Templeton) have been beaten twice while Fred Poskitt (Waimairi Beach) has had a win, a half and a loss. Ma'suv slK£.e.a: vnueaien trophy for the player with the best record in the competition. They are Stephen Paterson (Waitikiri), Murray Brown and John Orr (both Christ-, church), ! John Hanton (Avondale), Barry Alexander (Coringa) and Noel, Bain and John Dixon (both Harewood).
