'Protect rivers’
PA Wellington. It is important to identify rivers needing protection so that long-range planning for hydro-devel-opment can take them into account, says the Canoeing Association. In its submission on wild and scenic rivers to the Commission for the Environment, the association said: “If action is not taken soon, there may be few rivers worth saving.” The association suggested that a reasonably accurate assessment of protection needed for wild and scenic rivers could be made by consultation with recreational users and conservation groups.
