Strong advance in Australia

Australian share markets ended the week with big gains by speculative stocks, a strong mining sector, and some rises for selected industrial stocks. The Oil shale duo, Southern and Central Pacific rose. Central Pacific gained 150 c to 880 c while Southern Pacific rose 20c to 305 c.

Among the Industrials, BHP closed at 708 c after arise of 16c to a new annual high of 710 c earlier.

Bank of NSW rose 4c to 598 c, CSR gained 5c to 298 c, and Elders was up 5c to t2loc.

Ansett eased 2c to 146 c, and David Jones fell 5c to 130 c.

Diamond hopes assisted ICRA to rise 12c to 262 c, but it was also helped by the j jump in copper prices due to I the closure of the Kolwezi j mine in Zaire after the invasion from Angola. Other copper stocks continued to improve with MIM
