Strike will close ports
About 200 members of the Lyttelton branch of the Harbour Board Employees' Union voted unanimously last evening to support a national five-day strike. The members, at a meeting which lasted about 45 minutes, agreed to support
a ban on work from May 31 until June 6. The strike will force the closing of all ports in New Zealand. Union members are protesting against the size of a pay offer, the union having been offered a 3 per cent rise at recent award talks which broke down.
