Derby fancy disappoints
NZPA-Reuter York, England Leonardo de Vinci, favourite for the English Derby on June 7, flopped badly in the Mecca-Dante Stakes, 10.5 furlongs here on Wednesday. The impressive winner was Shirley Heights, a bay colt by Mill Reef out of Hardiemma, which was eased in the final furlong by jockey. Grenville Starkey, to finish a length and a half clear of Julio Mariner, ridden by Edward Hide. Pat Eddery held Leonardo de Vinci back until the nine three-year-olds turned for home. But the chestnut colt, by Brigadier Gerard out of Lupe, failed to respond when asked to make his bid by Eddery, and completely lacked the devastating turn of speed which he had shown at Ascot last month.
