Crucial Namibia talks
NZPA-Reuter New York
Western envoys will begin crucial talks to win nationalist guerrilla backing for a Namibia (South West Africa) peace plan today in a mood of pressimism caused by South Africa’s raid into Angola last Thursday. Diplomats taking part in the long-planned talks acknowledged that they faced no easy task in the wake of the military thrust into Angola against what Pretoria sid were guerrilla bases of the South West Africa People’s Organisation. The plan calls for a ceasefire, a pull-out by all but 1500 South African troops, and United Nations-super-vised elections leading to Namibia’s independence, perhaps bv the end of the year. White South Africans closed ranks behind the Government yesterday against United Nations critics of the raid.
Backing for the Government came from the Parliamentary Opposition, the Progressive Federal Party.
